Artist's Statement

Nature and the human form, especially the male figure, have inspired my work. I grew up hiking, swimming, sailing, canoeing, and fishing. I found both solace and uncertainty sitting on a beach, by a riverbank, swimming in open waters, or hiking in dense woods. Being in, on, or near water was liberating and helped me come to terms with my sexuality. My love of the outdoors and being queer is central to my identity.

A large part of my studio practice is to paint en plein air. It allows me to express the emotional freedom I feel in nature. I strive to capture light, color, and texture that connects me to my environment. I have been inspired by the American Impressionists as well as such artists as Joaquín Sorolla, Henry Scott Tuke, John Henry Twachtman, Edwin Dickinson, John Koch, and Walter Stuempfig.

As a book publisher I was drawn to multilayered, deeply emotional narratives and characters. As an artist I wish to create psychologically complex visual stories in my landscapes, still-lifes, and figurative work. In all of my art I seek an outward calm coupled with an inward unease. It is through this tension that I hope my work connects emotionally with others.
